My Wash ‘N Go Hair Routine

If you’ve ever talked hair with me then you know I am a die-hard fan of the wash ‘n go routine for my curls. It is my holy grail, my signature, my staple. What is a wash ‘n go you ask? Technically it means you wash your hair, put your products in it and go about your day. For me it’s easy, it saves my hair from heat damage and I don’t have to manipulate my hair in order to style it. On the days that I wash my hair, I apply a leave-in conditioner, an oil (or a cream with oils in it), and a gel. In that order. From there I let my hair air dry and voila!

There are a lot of misconceptions in the natural hair community about wash ‘n go’s. Some are that wash ‘n go’s are only for people with “good” hair (there’s a lot to unpack with that phrase and we don’t have time to do it today) or that wash ‘n go’s cause your hair to tangle. I can say for me, neither of those statements is true. Listen, I have a tight curl pattern. I am for sure in the 4 curl type category and I pull off wash ‘n go’s easily. Like people always stop me out in public and ask me how I style my hair easily. I also don’t have any issues with detangling my hair.

I started using the wash ‘n go method in 2011. Back then I was wearing a brush-out/boy cut that I went to the barbershop each week to maintain. I decided to grow my hair out at the end of the year, fell down the YouTube tutorial rabbit hole and discovered the wash ‘n go. As my hair continued to get longer I kept up with the routine and it’s always worked for me. When my hair was longer, I would do a wash day once a week. Now that I’ve cut it agan, I’ll do a wash day every couple of days. I’ve tried to do other techniques and let’s just say the twist out and braid out methods don’t work for me as fabulously as they do for everyone else (jealous).

Since I’m always asked how I get my curls to pop and what products I use I thought it would be both helpful and fun to share a video tutorial of my wash day routine with all of my Curlfriends! The video below is a step-by-step guide showing how I style my hair using the wash ‘n go method.
